It’s good at obedience, agility, and other sport competitions and has served credibly as a war dog and a police dog. Friendly nature and desire to help people in need make these dogs suited for therapy work. They serve as guides for the blind and seizure alert dogs for those suffering from epilepsy.

Though the name of the breed is purely British, Germany is claimed to be the country of the breed’s origin. These dogs use their front legs when fighting; similar to the way a man would fight. The breed originated in Germany in the 19th century. The ancestry of the breed is traced back to ancient Greek Molosser type dogs used for fighting, herding bulls and guarding the property. Though, all hunting and fighting instincts are bred out of the dogs we know today, the owner should train and socialize the pet from the earliest age to avoid aggression and disobedience.
