It is a well known fact that Boxers resulted from crossing the Bullenbeisser, a Mastiff type of dog used to fight bisons, and the English Bulldog, which is so famous for performing in a bloody sport, called pit fighting.
The breed was developed in Germany in late 1800's. There are a few speculations as to the origin of the breed's name. It may be that the dog was named so because of its square head, that looks like a box. Another opinion is that the Boxer got such a name because it seems to imitate a boxer's movements.
The first Boxer club was founded in Munich in 1895. Later the breed appeared in America and was registered by the AKC in 1904. Popularization of the Boxer began during the Second World War with the increasing demand in working dogs.

Nowadays, the Boxer is used in a variety of activities. Many owners prefer to show their dogs and are doing quite well with it. Boxers tend to be more than occasional winners at prestigious competitions. Boxers can also be used as guardians, military service dogs, police, and therapy dogs.To excel in this sort of work, Boxers should possess outstanding physical and temperament traits. A good working dog should be a real athlete. The working Boxer should have a stable personality and prey drive.
